Is fish considered meat??

Greetings Carnivores,

Here’s an interesting question I have come across MANY times:

Is fish “meat”?

The answer is actually very simple, โ€ฆ or is it?

I was taught many years ago, ALL muscle IS meat. The body is basically broken down into muscle, fat, sinew and bone. Everything that is a muscle (including the Heart) is considered protein, and therefore โ€ฆ meat.

Simple, right?

Well, “if” all muscle is “meat” then, โ€ฆ the flesh of any fish is almost entirely muscle and therefore a protein (considered to be one of the very best sources of protein) and by the simple definition, must be “meat”, right?

Listen, โ€ฆ I’m going to be “Switzerland” on this one from here on out. I don’t want to upset any particular beliefs so, I just present the following for you to decide:

Catholicism considers fish to be in a separate category because they are not warm blooded mammals, do not reside on land, and breathe air and therefore ok to consume during Lent.

Fair enough.

In culinary terms, fish IS considered to be in a separate category so โ€ฆ is it meat??

I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

    I see meat as anything that is the flesh of an animal so yes, fish would be meat. Following your blog, interesting stuff here. ๐Ÿ™‚

    I would say fish is meat since it is the flesh of an animal. Following your blog, interesting stuff here. (tried to post this earlier but for some reason it didn’t work.)

    Thanks, Doug. I never went to culinary school nor theological college. I just know in biology, meat is roughly equivalent of muscle so fish muscle is meat. It’s definitely protein. The bigger question relates to offal, apart from the small amount of smooth muscle in the blood vessels, liver, brains, pancreas, and kidneys have no muscle. The heart is meat, but it’s made from involuntary (like the smooth) cardiac muscle. There are three types of muscle. Voluntary (striated), involuntary (smooth), and cardiac (heart) muscle.

        For those for you wondering โ€ฆ I incorrectly identified ALL vital internal organs as muscle โ€ฆ Dr. Gary corrected me. The Heart IS a muscle but, while the Liver, Kidneys, Pancreas and even the Brain are high in protein, they are NOT muscles.

      I agree that fish IS in a separate “food” group Auntie but โ€ฆ I was just tossing it out there for debate. That’s why I’m going to continue to take the “5th” on whether or not it should be considered “meat”

      Oh and, offal? Ya, I’m not much of a fan either โ€ฆ my Mom used to shove Heart and Liver down our throats when I was a kid โ€ฆ

        Yeah DougieD, my Father loved all that stuff, you name it, tripe, heart, liver, gizzards, but refused to eat Spam! ๐Ÿ˜€
